New Frankenrifle UPDATE

Unread post by raymond » February 29th, 2020, 6:11 pm

Just finished up my "Frankenrifle"

Always wanted a light weight 20 inch rifle with A2 sights.

Some of the parts are mods, some are surplus, and some are repop, some are rare.

20 inch A2 1/7 twist melonite FN barrel cut down to A1 pencil barrel profile and feed ramps cut to M4. A1 barrels are getting harder to find as lots of M16 parts kits have hit the market sans barrel. Manufacturers make them, but not fast enough and the price has risen. Was cheaper to cut down an A2 barrel. A rifle with the A1 pencil barrel sure is nice and points quick. EDIT A1 barrels are available from places like Green Mountain, but they have a rep for really good barrels followed by some that are, well,.........not so good.

A2 Anderson lower

M4 Anderson upper. Wanted a Colt light machine gun A2 upper as it lacks the forward assist but they are pretty $$$$$. Wanted it to kind of simulate the early straight M16 pre forward assist look. Will keep a look out for one and am using this upper until one appears. Edit No forward assist, as this rifle fires from an open bolt.

M4 carry handle with 3/600 sight.

A2 front sight tower.

Original surplus A1 triangle handguards.

Repop A1 pistol grip from Brownell's

Canadian C1 buttstock. It is essentially an A2 buttstock with the 5/8" shorter pull. It also is made of glass reinforced nylon instead of the earlier A1 material. Supposed to be stronger and less shatter prone. Also does not spec foam filler for extra rigidity like the A1 and A2.

Early "duckbill/tuning fork flash suppressor.

A1 style "teardrop" forward assist.

Ambidextrous M16 style selector

Rise Armament RA140 trigger with KNS anti walk pins.

Took Kraft Nickel Boron coated bolt.

M1/M14 nylon sling.

Just got it together. Pictures to follow tomorrow, as I have to get to the boat club for the dinner tonight.

Finally got around to taking some pics.

Front sight base. You can see the original diameter of the barrel under the front sight base. It was cut down to A1 profile both before and after the front sight base.

Sure would like to find a A2 light machine gun upper for it. It has the A2 rear sight but it does not have the forward assist as it fires from an open bolt.

If any of you guys ever see one for sale someplace, or in someone's parts bin, or in a box of stuff for sale at a gun show, hope you'll remember me  :)

I'll bet you had to get the pry bar out to get the wallet open far enough to dig that much money out for that piece.
