Finally got a decent shooting day!!!

Unread post by rickf » August 26th, 2020, 5:55 pm

Finally got some decent shooting weather. One day worth from the looks of it. I got up this morning and it was 64 out and the forecast was for 81 and low humidity. I told the wife I was gone!!! I am going to the range!! I have been reloading fro the last four months so it is time to test some of those reloads. I have to say I was impressed with what I hit on right out of the box. Never used Vihtavouri powder before but I compared it to the old standby BL-C2 and WOW! what a difference. This is with .223 in my Ruger AR15 shooting Hornady 55Gr. FMJBT using LC 67 brass. I used the Vihtavourin133 23 gr. in one batch and in the other batch I used 26 grains of BL-C2. I fired 20 rounds of the Vihtavoutri and only 10 of the BL-C2 since I only had one mag loaded with it and the group was different enough that there was no need to add another 10. I shot the 200 yards at the end of the day and I had already packed the Vihtavouri away but I am sure the group would have reflected the 100 group.

Here is the BL-C2 at 100 yards. 10 rounds

Here is the BL-C2 at 200 yards. I did not reset the sights, I just wanted to see the group. Not bad considering the wind. If you count 9 there are only 9, I had a light primer strike. One of three for the day. Not happy with the Rise Armament trigger. I will be calling them tomorrow.

Are you using mil spec or commercial primers :?: Also did you check primer seating depth :?:

I have Rise Armament triggers on 7 ARs and lots of friends with them, with no problems whatsoever.

CCI #41 Mil spec primers and depth is spot on. The strike is real light, you could hear it was light. Unfortunately those primers are what I have and since there are zero primers out there to be found it is what I have to use. I am actually curtailing my shooting quite a bit since the ammo is so high in price when you can even find it and to reload....... forget it, primers are unobtainium. Powder is whatever you can find and all the popular powders are long gone. Bullets? yea, right. Crapshoot there too.

I shoot nothing but mil surp or mil spec ammo and have had no problem with any of my triggers. I even shot up 1,000 rounds of that horrid Russian steel case stuff, again, no problem.

Did your pins line up well on the trigger when you installed it :?:

Did you over tighten your pins :?:

Did you use the set screws on the bottom of the trigger cassette, and if so, did you overtighten them :?:

All of the above can bind a trigger and lighten the strike of the hammer.

I thought the Russian ammo was corrosive. We are talking 5.56 right ?

It was 62 grain "Wolf" and was marked as non-corrosive and listed .223 as the caliber. Black 20 round boxes, dark grey laquered steel cases. Copper coated bullet.

I bought it during the 2012 ammo drought.

Pins lined up perfect and not over tightened, This is the Rave 140 so an upgrade from the one with the set screws. There are none on this version. I called them today and explained everything and they are going to send me a new one. I had issues with this one when I first put it in, the reset was hanging on it so I took it back out and blew it out on their recommendation and it got better over time but the break still feels soft. The guy I was talking to said that sounds like an issue overall so they will just replace it. I need to send this one back first so I hope the post office has their crap together. I have ordered a couple things from Midway lately and I see they got the message about their abysmal shipping, they are really getting stuff out fast now, as long as you go with UPS and NOT USPS!!!

The Russian ammo has been non corrosive for many years.

Let us know what you find out about the trigger

Rise Armament triggers are ones I have been recommending for years, as I and my friends have had good luck with them and they are priced reasonably. No, they are not a ultra-light, breathe on it and it fires, trigger. But they are a good compromise. Light enough for non match grade work, but would probably still pass the military drop test.

Again, let us know.

I called them and explained what was happening and they agreed it sounded like a defect and sent me a return label. I need to go to the post office today to send out a carb so I will pick up the required envelope and send it back and they are sending out a new one once they get it.
