Shovel . . wood or metal?

Newbie MUTT owner. 1966 A1. Has wooden handle shovel and ax on it now, but PO was not the most factory class type of owner. I see all metal shovels for sale for the 151, but don't know if it's a early/late thing or A1 vs. A2 thing or if wood was never an acceptable shovel. Which should I mount on my A1? From what I have read, anything outdoors was painted OD green, so not treated wood even if that is the correct tool.

Wooden handles for shovel and axe. Metal handles were not used.

Just went back and read this thread and got the impression that, where in the world did I think that a metal handled shovel existed. This was the eBay listing that planted that seed...

The "D" handle shovel has a metal handle with a wood cross grip held in place by a through bolt/screw. they were issued unpainted.
If you click on the 1st photo and make it larger you can see it rather well.

While looking for a shovel for my Kaiser M715, I realized what I was hearing wrong. The eBay listing stated metal handle and I was thinking metal shaft. The shovel I referenced did, indeed, have a wooden shaft and a metal handle at the end of the shaft. So wood is the way to go.
Now, to find that much shorter M715 shovel. 37" instead of the 40" or so other jeep shovels. I know the M38A1 under hood shovel was shorter than the side mounted shovels, I gotta go find me the specs on that one.
