Tan Canvas Front Seat Bottoms

Unread post by agwrangler » June 4th, 2019, 2:39 pm

Hey all, has anyone ever seen tan canvas seat bottoms?? They surely had to have made them at some point.
Would give a left nut for 2 if anyone has any.
Thanks a lot!
Sean

They stopped using canvass in the 60's so that was long before tan came out. I am guessing they had tan vinyl but it seems most of the original tan stuff has dried up and there apparently is not enough demand to reproduce it. Get the green ones and some of the right color fabric paint. I have seen a LOT of tan cargo covers out on the military base that are green on the inside so that must be what they are doing in the military.

They definitely made Tan Canvas seat cushions, I have some, and have seen others. I just have never actually seen the lower cushions on the front seats. All others I have seen before. Who knows, probably made so few, and they got used up fast!!!

Or the ones you saw were painted with fabric paint.

No. They are not painted. They are Tan canvas. I spent 3 hours on my knees next to the bathtub cleaning them up with soap and water. If they are painted, I would know.

Ok, now the next question would be are you sure they are military and not made by one of the aftermarket makers? I just don't see the military going back to canvas after finding out how bad it rotted in jungle environments. Once they went to vinyl they put that on everything.

I will jump in here and say that my aftermarket canvas ones typically have a much softer foam insert (which are downright comfortable, in fact) whereas the military ones will have the high density and rather unyielding foam inserts.

The insides of them are that old ass material that is under the canvas in M38A1 and MB seats. (that grass looking crap, not sure what its called). Thats whats inside of these, which makes me think they are old style, not new manufacture. Not to mention I found all of the Tan stuff in a crate from an old military auction from 745 years ago. Why would they be in crates with mule, M151, and M37 parts from an original military auction? Doesn't make too much sense. There were plenty of other Tan parts in there (gauges, side curtains, rims, etc)

They got rid of the horsehair before they got rid of the canvas. I think you will find they are aftermarket covers that someone bought and stuffed the old stuffings in them. They sure as hell did not have the tan back in the early 60's.

They look perfect enough for me. They will look great on the Tan A2.

That's all that counts. I would check around with places like WeeBee or one of the other seat makers and see if they could do up a set in tan with the new memory foam.
