M1 Garand? Now the difference between the garand and the m14 is the fully automatic option on the m14?Maybe the garand weighed more?

Perhaps it is a little heaver but it has more kick, 30.06 as compared to 308 or a 7.62 ! :D

Very nice Rick.

Thew M14 held 20 round magazines as opposed to the 8 round clips of the M1. The M14 used 7.62x51 /308 ammo where the M1 used 30-06. The M14 was a bit shorter and just a little lighter than the M1. They started out with select fire but disabled that after a short period due to dependability issues.

Very nice, Rick--i haven't seen one in that good of condition in a long time.

Question for you: is that old Army weapons program they ran out of Fort Benning still alive? It was like the "Army Marksmanship Program" or something like that. You used to be able to buy surplus rifles directly from the government (with all the usual controls in place) and they were in generally decent condition--some allegedly unused.

My troops used to participate in the program, and many had nice weapons collections...i was always too busy or otherwise occupied to play, but always wondered about it.

Civilian Marksmanship Program, Yes it is and that is where this one came from. The pickings are getting slim nowadays since they do not release the newer guns. This is one of the group of 85,000 that came back from the Philippines. I paid a little extra to get a basically new gun instead of an older original, this one is completely rebuilt by the CMP with new stock, barrel and a lot of other NOS parts. The receiver is original. I wanted a gun I can take out and shoot without worrying about damaging a piece of history. I may try for another real one in service grade down the line if there are any left when the money comes back again. Below is a link to the CMP sales program for the Garands.

Actually my 03-A3 is also through that program but before it was administered directly by them. My dad bought many guns in the 50'-60's when the military sold them through that program.

Be Careful With That Dirty-06, it can blow a Big hole, probably the most versatile cartridge out there, over 100 different ammo options, 55 grains at over 4000fps and 150 grain @ 3000fps and it was around before the Model T, my favorite cartridge.

A lovely Christmas/New Year's present!!!
The workhorse that won WW2!
Manufactured between 55-57 makes it a Springfield rifle produced just before the X guns.
Close to being one of the last of the Moheicans.

Enjoy!!!

I don't know how you would load a 55 grain bullet into a 30-06, It would be set so far back from the lands I would be afraid to fire it! As far as 150 grain they are going off at 2650-2800 fps with 2900 the absolute max for a M1. I have been shooting 165 grain HPBT Sierra in the 03 at 2750 fps with 47 grains of IMR 4895.

DO NOT shoot commercial 30.06 ammo in a M1 garand and DO NOT shoot commercial .308 in a M14/M1A rifle. The pressure curve can be such that it can break the operating rod and a couple of other parts. ONLY SHOOT ROUNDS LOADED TO MILITARY SPEC IN THE ABOVE MENTIONED RIFLES.

That out of the way, nice rifle 8)

BTW, the ballistics are essentially the same for 30.06 as 7.621x51mm NATO. The difference in the case size has to do with advances in propellants.

NOPE! You can continue to hold my other stuff for safekeeping until eternity or until it becomes legal in NJ again. Eternity will probably come first. This one stays with me!!! I have enough mil-spec ammo to last me a long time but as long as you reload to mil-spec properties you are fine. You can also replace the gas plug with a replacement delayed charge type which dissipates some of the charge and makes commercial ammo safe to use. Commercial ammo is just too expensive. Considering I have thousands of rounds of live and empty brass I will just continue to reload.

We played with the 55 grain back in the day when I could afford to shoot and they were available over the counter, now I think you have to load your own.

So you are putting a 22 caliber bullet in a 30 caliber gun with a plastic spacer and expecting it to be accurate? I seriously doubt the bullet is going to pick up the twist from the barrel through that sabot very accurately. You notice he was shooting that in a 350.00 gun? I am NOT putting that in my Garand!!!!!
