Ignition module compatability
Are the Swiss module and Prestolite module interchangeable in both distributor types, that is the type with the cam rubbing block for breaker points and the style designed for the swiss module???

The swiss module uses the std cam, the prestolite kit came with a different cam to swap out, the prestolite uses the original rotor, I think I'm right, if not, someone will chime in.

Hambone is correct. You can't mix-n-match between the two types of SSI kits.

Is the swiss module compatible with both rotor cams,as the trigger wheel is the pick up for the module.On the Prestolite module,the pickup is the rotor cam. My understanding from looking at manual pics is that the prestolite module only works with the fluted cam rotor,but the Swiss module works with either cam rotor???? correct?

Here's the Prestolite kit. It comes with a replacement for the original (points type) rotor stem but it uses the ORIGINAL-type of rotor arm. Note also that the Prestolite kit has TWO wires. It also comes with a non-magnetic (plastic) feeler gauge for setting the air gap.
Next up is the Swiss Controls kit. This one uses the original (points type) rotor stem but it uses the big disk-shaped rotor arm. Note that the Swiss Control unit has THREE wires. There is no requirement for a gap gauge on this setup.
Neither kit will work unless you use the correct combination of rotor stem and rotor arm.

I hope no one has an issue with me placing my post in here, it is relevant. I run the prestolite ignition module in the mutt (2 wire) pictured above. I have been reading a lot of those modules are failing as time goes on. One of my spares has suffered from all the potting compound leaking out all over the place.
I am a Electronics technician and want to disassemble one of these that has failed in the hopes of finding out why they fail. My curiosity stems whether they fail from moisture shorting out the electronics or simply dried up electrolytic capacitors or some other component failure. I want to find out if those of us that are using the prestolite ignition module are sitting on a ticking time bomb just waiting to leave us stranded somewhere.
If you have a burned out prestolite module or one that has all the potting leaked out I would like to obtain that from you. I will pay for your shipping expenses. In return I will post photos and technical information learned from the disassembly of the module here. I think this would be worth pursuing and we can all learn something from it.
And if anyone can ever locate a electronic schematic of the inside of the module, this would be very helpful. So far I have been unable to locate one.

Lou, this came up years ago and the main problem seemed to be that once the potting material went away the extremely close proximity of the components left them in a position to short out against one another. It wasn't a matter of a component failure as much as it was just touching another component. If they were caught and repotted they were fine.

Not much I can do with an oil filled can with winding's in it. Never took one apart and doubt it could be resealed. How often have you folks had the REAL military coil fail? I will not even comment on the cheap Chinese coil. Just save your money and buy the real one!

Ya, I paid $275+ for a coil from a vender in the USA a while ago, it didn't last long, oh for the days when NOS coil cost $10?
