The WD 40 will clean it but be sure to oil it afterwards! WD 40 is not a lubricant, it is a solvent and it will dry out in a couple days. Spray a little on a metal surface in your garage and then check that surface in a week and you will see what I mean.

Wouldn't it be better to use brake cleaner?

I wonder if mineral spirits would be an option?

I had thought about both, the brake cleaner and the solvent, but I have thought that it can be harmful to a part due to the aggressiveness of the solvent. the wd 40 cleans much less but is also less aggressive.

ok ok! Understood, I can use solvent without problem, kerosene is not easy to buy in Spain. I like to comment in this forum on almost everything that I am doing because I know that here I receive good advice from people who know what they are talking about.
I am young and sheet metal, I am not a mechanic ... When I do something for the first time it is easy to break something just by not asking in a place like this. : wink:: wink:
Thanks for your answer Mark

I agree with Rupert, His original question was "will WD-40 clean the distributer?" Then everyone chimes in with their own favorite cleaner of choice. One of my pet peeves with forums in general is people not reading the first post and then not reading all the posts after that one before they answer and because of that the thread generally winds way off the original question. In this case I think it would have been best to answer his question about the WD-40 and then if you think there is something better offer it up. But think about it first. Is your solvent any different in the end than his? or mine? or Marks? They all do the same thing, they clean old oil and grease off. Then also consider that Rupert is in another country on another continent so he may or may not have access to what we have here. Also, can what he is using be used for other purposes around the house/garage.
Just some food for thought.

The original question was should he repair the distributor. Then he asked about wd40. Not sure people offering suggestions is bad. I wouldn't use wd40, I'd use brake cleaner. No residue left over. So in my opinion, brake cleaner is better.

No no, people who offer advice can't be mean! and much less when these tips are requested. Let's get out of the misunderstanding!

From Rickf's answer I have learned that I can use wd40 and then grease and from Mark's answer that I can also clean it with solvent and I won't break anything, I don't understand the last part of Mark's message very well because it seems that he says that it is mechanic but at home... although he says he better shut up for some reason I don't understand... the translator...

I don't think Rickf means that someone is bad for giving his opinion, just that sometimes topics in threads get sidetracked by small details. Very common in the forums.

To finish... I'm going to upload photos of the repair, I think tomorrow I'll clean it and paint it while the pieces arrive. Greetings to all and have a good night! or late in your time zone.

After spending a whole day testing I haven't been able to get it to work... I've left it as impossible, I'll put you in a situation.
This distributor was a donor and I have never seen it work, now I am preparing it because I would like to have it as a spare.

I have cleaned it with solvent and with brake cleaner, then I have greased it with normal grease (not with dielectric grease)
-New coil
-New rotor
-New points game
-2 new capacitors
I have tried both distributor caps.
I have verified that the piston number 1 is up and the rotor points to the lowered area of the distributor
At least the first plug has spark, (I haven't checked the other 3 plugs yet)
The cables are fine because the other distributor works first time.
The most I have achieved is a random explosion and smoke has come out of the intake and carburetor area.

I don't know what else to do... I can check the other three plugs for spark but I'm pretty sure one of them has no spark. If a spark plug has no spark, it could be because of the cap, but I've tried both caps and this distributor doesn't work with either of them... I don't know... can you think of something?
