Trailer Project

Unread post by hondo100 » August 24th, 2022, 7:01 am

Finally got to the M416 project. Spent a couple half days getting it completely torn apart.

Thank goodness for the lift. Crawling around on the floor isn't as easy as it once once.

Need a lunnete (obviously) and an inter-vehicular cable.

Thanks,

Ralph

Looks good.
I would while you have it apart, replace the wheel bearings, oil seal and the washers on the axle. Those parts are available at the local parts counter or from Summit racing. Unless the axle nuts are damaged, they can be reused.
I would also suggest either replacing the tail lights with new composite style or at least replacing the lens with the Gama Goat lens. I would also replace the wiring harness as most likely it is original to 1965.
I have worked on for resale over 28 M416 trailers in the past five years so if you have and question feel free to contact me.
Good job!

Thanks for the offer. It's for an151A2, so it will get the composite tail lights. Aren't the bearings and seals the sme as the M151?

I believe the bearings are the same but I am not sure on the seals. I have not bought any for my !51. I have spares but i never looked at the numbers on the packing.

The Bearings and Cup/race are the same, but the Seal is different, it is part# 516992 NSN# 5330-00-678-1759

Axle and springs are done. Tires came in yesterday. Free shipping at Summit is now$9.95. Still a deal. Just a few more bits and the chassis will be ready to go back together. The tub has at least 5 coats of paint that have to come off. :(

Those springs sure look nice but I think you are going to find they are pretty sticky once all together. I would paint the contact surfaces with Sliplate.

Everything is blasted, primed, and painted. Chassis started back together yesterday. Tub and fenders are waiting patiently.

Looks like you have a CUCV project going on at the same time. Trailer is looking good.

Rolling chassis is complete, less taillights and a few wiring harness details. Tub should go back on this evening. Great Smokey Mountain Convoy is Friday!!

Fresh as a daisy. It will be a real shame to get dirt on it.

You should give it to me. I'd take good care of it for ya!

I was a little surprised on the lack of parts availability.
