Cool Painting

Unread post by Hambone » September 11th, 2024, 3:52 pm

This painting has been hanging in a high school friend of mines moms house I know since the early 70's. Story goes it was painted by a soldier that was stationed on this hill during the war, I always commented on it when I was at her house, his mom has since passed and he wanted to give me the painting, I was tickled, I will display it well. My friend doesn't know much about the history of it, thought about taking it out of the frame to see if it has a name on it, scared I might damage it, it's a cool ass pic tho.

That appears to be Hamburger Hill in the A Shau Valley. The 101st lost 72 soldiers in a battle that lasted 10 days in May of 1969.

A VERY broad overview of the 101st operations there. I like how they say the 101st "supported" incursions into Cambodia and Laos.

And looking at the pic closer it appears that I may have been mistaken. Looking at the bunkers and remnants of infrastructure I think that is Khe-San.

I love the rare and exceptional artwork that soldiers produce.

I happen to be a passive collector of WWII V-mail and I'm especially fond of the artwork that can occasionally be found on those letters. These are the sorts of things that speak to the humanity of the artist and, by extension, the humanity of normal people who find themselves stuck in exceptional circumstances.

I'm not an art critic by any means but, that painting conveys to me dreariness and a LOT of it...with no way to get away from it. An island of dreariness in a sea of green. Very thought-provoking.
