Newbie With 1964 M151A2

Unread post by Aging Boomer » November 11th, 2009, 12:03 am

Hello everyone, and thank you for letting me join. I have been lurking for a couple weeks. I just acquired a 1964 M151 A2 in non-running condition. It was in part trade for a Mopar Muscle car I sold. I knew what MUTTS were, but wasn't hunting for one. Now that I have it, I am going through the process to make it run, purchase the missing parts, make it a driver, and I know better than make a 'basket case' and lose interest. A semi-local guy here in SoCal looked it over and said it was a complete, original, uncut, no rust A2 with all the original marking. He thinks it was an Army vehicle. The story I heard was....10 years ago the owner blew the engine, they R&R it with a good used engine. It was lowered in, and they walked away. Now 10 years later... I BOUGHT A MANUAL and have read it, I have oiled all cylinders, rotated the engine by hand, bought batteries, and will make it run/drive. I am in the process of cleaning gas tanks, rebuilding carbs, hooking up wires, vacuum lines, gas lines, motor mounts, 'u' joints, everything needed for vehicles left for a long period of time. I have 'reasonable wrench' skills, so it will run! At first I thought it was an A1 because of the 1964 title/dash date. However, it is an A2 with lights, trailing arms and ROPS.
I have been purchasing parts on eBay and have visited some sites. Here is a list are some of the parts I will buy from anyone who may have them surplus, and would be grateful for good leads and directions. Both front seat frames with cushions, shifter knob, horn button, parking brake band, front transfer case slip yoke and 'U' joint, complete air cleaner with hose, new soft top. Frame mount for clutch 'Z' bar, and spring. I am sure I will need more as soon as I rebuild the carb, get it running, and find out what is really worn and not up to spec. I hope the attached pictures make it.
Thanks
Aging Boomer

Someone stuck the wrong data plate on it. The did not make the A2 until the 70's. Welcome.

Welcome to the site. If you need any manuals, just click here:

This manual has 902 pages, and the one I use most. It takes awhile to download:

Welcome to the board. I can see you are already on top of most of the things that need to be done. As was mentioned they did not make A2's until the 70's. You don't need a data plate to make it run though. I will defer to the west coast guys on parts since I am on the other coast. I deal with Saturn, Frontline and Kc Gonzo for parts over here. Make sure you get that transfer slip yoke in and the transmission filled with oil before you get the motor running otherwise you will ruin the transmission. Other than that I think you are well ahead of the game.

Welcome to the 8 AB, bunch of great guys on this site willing to help any way they can. I am a new Mutt Nut also, aquiring my first in April and not a machanic and the site has been a HUGE help! In CA try Owens Export, Steve has a lot of parts, expertise and is easy to talk to.

Welcome. Don't worry too much about the data plate. In 1964 there were 151s and M151A1s. It's great that it's still around.
