Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
i wonder what sort of strain that puts on the prop shaft u joints, and how much more frequently they need to be replaced?
Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
I imagine a great deal of strain is placed on those shafts. Wonder why they removed the grill & relocated the radiator? Non original power pack maybe? Also curious as to why they chopped the windshield frame down instead of just removing it?

Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
Great looking beach, wonder where?
Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
It will not really put any more strain on the u-joints and propshafts but the wheel bearings and stub axles are screaming in pain. Along with the ball joints. You can see the left front is cambered in at the top. Something is bent or worn. BUT, You notice it got rid of the the positive camber in the rear.

Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
What i experienced with the Mutt was that the bigger and wider the tires get, the lesser its steering linkage, drive-train and hubs gets. The simplicity of the design makes the Mutt a easily serviceable and reliable vehicle but limits it to be modified to a certain extent. I doubt in practicality anything like this test bed would survive more than a few weeks on the road.
Edit PS. A guy i met in my mutting days had modified Mitsubishi Shogun hubs on the front of suspension of the mutt to replace the entire wheel package. I was intrigued at the time by how he managed to do it, later on he managed to replace both diffs with the Shoguns. Apparently it all didn't go as planned and the vehicle managed to end up at the scrapper as it required a lot of work to be returned to the original state (his statement, not mine).

Re: MUTT with 8 Wheels
Hi Matt. Yes currently mutt-less. The last i had let go of personal reasons. I must admit i feel ashamed that i went a bit further with my frankenstienish and childish ideas with that one. None the less have my eye on one which is currently in its original form. Being mutt-less makes one rather feel like one is missing the spark.WC Matt wrote: Thought the same thing. Welcome back!
