I don't remember exactly where I got the picture from (on the internet), but it was from 1965/66 as I recall.johnfal wrote:Great job on the Jeep Snoopy, but are you sure the photo from the life magazine is Vietnam. I ask because:-
a) the terrain looks wrong.
b) Vietnam has little or no sheep and I have never seen any in my 11 years here. They have goats but not woolly critters like those in the pic.
c) the writing on the rear of the truck going the other way looks a bit middle eastish.
I stand to be corrected but it just sort of sticks out as wrong.
Still a great looking Jeep though.
The unit was in Vietnam at that time and that's a fact.
These soldiers look like they are in operation, not on an exercise. I was thinking it could have been in the Lebanon, but that was in 1958; the M151 was not around, nor was the unit...Or maybe in the Sinai because of the Arabic writing, but I thought that these rotations started way later in the 70's/80's.
The guy in the back looks like an "irregular" (i.e. SF) type wearing a non-US camouflage uniform. This leads me to believe that the picture was taken in VN during one of the operations metioned later on in this thread.
Now, I don't know about sheep or the like in Vietnam. I do know that there are areas with less vegetation...same in Thailand btw.
The more I look at it, the more confusing it gets to me as well.
Would Life magazine keep records of who took that pic, where and when?
It would be great if we could have access to that!
