M416 Paint
Will soon be media blasting my M416 trailer and need to know how much red oxide zinc phosphate primer should it take to spray paint the entire trailer. I will be mixing the paint 4 parts paint to one part Xylene. How may gallons do you think I will need? I was thinking two.

Re: M416 Paint
2 gallons will give you plenty with spare for the extra parts like rims and small parts. Are you doing the body separate from the frame? One thing I learned from Mark at Rapco years ago was to be sure you have a paint shaker and use it.................. for a long time. Otherwise you do not get the dulling agents mixed in and you end up with one of those really shiny presidential paint jobs. My trailer frame is like that.

Re: M416 Paint
I see you are from Mo. so you may be buying your paint from Rapco. If so do not hesitate to call and ask Mark about the paint. He will be able to tell you how much you need, the proper thinner and how much thinner. I used the military red oxide in the buzz bombs and I had a lot of issues with it flaking off and chipping even though the metal prep was done correctly. If you are using a more modern version then good but if it is old military stuff you might want to upgrade. If the primer does not stick then the paint on top of it will also come of in big flakes.

Re: M416 Paint
Rick,
I was thinking of POR 15's red oxide due to the military paint being so hard to handle.

Re: M416 Paint
I would just use a good commercial primer. I've used Rustoleum for rusty metal in the spray can and pints with good results.

Re: M416 Paint
Any of the name brands should be good but read the directions and see what they recommend as far as thinner. They may not all be compatible with xylene.

Re: M416 Paint
Ended up with one gallon each of Red Oxide Zinc Primer and 34094 383 Green (CARC) Substitute from Rapco. Also went with 2-cans of 911 Flat Black for the suspension. NOT going for a concours restoration. Took 3/4 of the gallon of red oxide with two coats. Took 1/2 gallon of green with two coats. Took 2 cans of black with two coats. Still need to rattle can the black and brown camo to match the jeep. Waiting for the two new tires.

Re: M416 Paint
your trailer looks very good to me. i would be inclined to stop there, but only because i was in before vehicles had camo paint jobs. anyway, well done.
Re: M416 Paint
I agree about the camo, seems that is all you see anymore. Even guys trying to represent Vietnam have camo on their vehicles not realizing that the vehicles were not ALWAYS in camo!

Re: M416 Paint
Thanks for the comments....when you have a 77 A2 in camo and a 67 M416, I expect it would be too much trouble explaining camo vs. no camo at car shows and other events when the only placard with the year is on the A2. They expect everything to match. Or, am I wrong on this issue and should I try to maintain period correctness???????????????????

Re: M416 Paint
Much easier to match the trailer to the vehicle. Also a lot less to change later on if you decide to go back to solid green.

Re: M416 Paint
Got the black on.....next is the brown. Following the 3-color camo pattern.
