Re: Restauración A2
Rupert, you are one of the fastest restorers I've seen, will it be ready next week? Hambone
Re: Restauración A2
I continue with the ground under the gas tank, these pieces were practically missing, and the little that was left fell off just by touching it, this time I couldn't make a piece like the one I did with the toolbox, it was impossible for me, very big, with many different shapes and had to fit the tank without too much excess.
In the end I decided to make two pieces but with the curves made more angular. Let's go with the images. First I drew on the sheet metal sheet and then I was cutting and folding and checking that the deposit has to fit inside, without being too big. The one you see on the left of the image I passed a little with the radial through some folds to facilitate the folding, I would not do it again, it feels a little weaker, then I had to give it a little consistency. On this sheet metal floor I have pasted a tape that has a sponge to prevent any possible friction, (I do not know if there will be, it is difficult to know for sure)
Then I made these covers, which go over the central cross member of the car, between the rear floor and the seats.

Re: Restauración A2
Here I have the welded covers, with this thick plate that the car had in the middle joining the structure.
I took advantage of the drills I made to remove the previous points to give the new points, then I gave it a very strong structural adhesive to delimit the piece well since the edge was a bit sinuous and I wanted to make it more straight I have added a bit of sealer by brush in this previous repair, I suppose that with the primer it was already protected but if the primer did not reach a small gap, the sealer by brush will prevent moisture from reaching. on the inside I added cavity wax, actually in each interior hollow that has remained of the car even though it is primed I have given cavity wax. Then it was the turn of the rear floor, same operation, measure and mark very carefully to drill right where it is, and not in a vacuum, from under the car you can draw the lines of the edges of the structure to make the holes without going out .
Then I laid the floor and marked where the solder points will go. I removed it, filed the primer on all three faces and put it back to weld, I screwed in areas again and welded the weld points spaced apart to avoid expansion and deformation. Everything has been fine, there is no strange bulge, all the edges are in place and the piece has a flange in va mounted in the central part of the car that is also very well mounted, in the last image you can see ... As it goes, it looks like a car!
I feel that the image is so blurry but I have no other that looks better, this piece of floor is the only one that I have been able to reuse, it was a little dented but without rust.I took advantage of the drills I made to remove the previous points to give the new points, then I gave it a very strong structural adhesive to delimit the piece well since the edge was a bit sinuous and I wanted to make it more straight I have added a bit of sealer by brush in this previous repair, I suppose that with the primer it was already protected but if the primer did not reach a small gap, the sealer by brush will prevent moisture from reaching. on the inside I added cavity wax, actually in each interior hollow that has remained of the car even though it is primed I have given cavity wax. Re: Restauración A2
To "finish" the body, it is time for the rear, it is made up of several pieces.
First I have welded the new lower part, inside it has a reinforcement around the trailer hitch bolts, I have made them new because this part of the car was very bad inside. Then it takes another piece similar to a Z, also for the support of the trailer hitch And finally the complete rear part, these parts are new but the car has the same, same size and same shape, when my car arrived it had rust holes and I did not know the parts and holes behind, here the holes are clear what's up...
If the rust has come out of the body from the inside, I am almost certain that you will have rust even behind the piece that I welded in the first photo, at least in my case it was like that, you cannot get there without removing all this.

Re: Restauración A2
As you know ... to weld, you have to file the plates and after welding that piece of the weld is filed and burned, in the joints it cannot be primed because the plates are overlapped and the primer does not enter, it could not leave all those Unprotected welds and filings without further ado, I decided to seal everything that I welded to prevent water from reaching as much as possible.
After I have painted the underbody (Anti gravel), I have also applied this paint in the area of the feet and in the back ... I have given a coat of putty to the joints of the new sheets so that the welds and the fins are not noticeable because they were a little wrinkled and it would be a bit ugly, then I have given it a primer, this time with a color that facilitates covering for the final color

Re: Restauración A2
To paint the final color I wanted to have it on the ground with the wheels on so I had to do a bit of mechanics before finishing the painting.
I really liked the MERDC camouflage, it is beautiful and it is not usual, but it seemed difficult to paint and also the annoyance that when I have to repaint in the future, I will have to repaint in several colors. But hey, in the end I decided on what I liked the most, even if it was more complicated and annoying ... I'm happy, I think it was painted well and at no time have I thought about leaving it green because I like it that way!
Parts are beginning to arrive, in the front and rear suspensions I have changed the 8 wheel bearings for timken ones just like the ones I had, I have also changed the 8 bearings seals, the 12 silent blok of the front and rear suspension arms, the 8 silent blocks of the front shock absorbers, 4 front shock absorbers, the new rear shock absorbers, the brake hoses, brake shoes and brake pistons ... damn mutt! it was not worth its weight in junk !!
After mounting all of this I was finally able to put it down!
And now paint! I was undecided for a long time, it was tempting to paint it in olive green with the inscriptions and stars, it is an easy painting, all green, but very common, at least in Spain ...I really liked the MERDC camouflage, it is beautiful and it is not usual, but it seemed difficult to paint and also the annoyance that when I have to repaint in the future, I will have to repaint in several colors. I would say there was never a paint job looking that good on a 151 in the Armed Forces!

Re: Restauración A2
Thanks! It has been a really long and rewarding job! I actually enjoy it, that's why I bought it such a bad mutt.
Everything is getting! A good welder is basic to weld well, the rest is practice and repair processes.
We continue, today a bit of differentials ...
It was evident that in a car in poor condition like mine was when I bought it, you had to take a look at the differentials, well, I filled them with valvulin to check if they came off, I left them for a while and the result was that yes, the checkpoints were coming out. It was predictable and I already had the seal kit for both differentials ...
It was the best I could do, they had a lot of finless brown trout and also one of the bearings was bad ... it was going to last a short time so I changed it, the other bearings seemed fine and I left them.
Al lio!!
Cleaning first, remove the adjusting crowns to clean well and see the bearings. And reassemble Wear sleeves

Re: Restauración A2
Finished here, with all new seals
In this case, the valve inside the differential revealed that something was not right, a small amount came out and in addition to being light gray, I can imagine that at some point water entered the differential.
And here the result, rusty bearing ... I had to change it. The two finished preparing for painting, cleaning, sanding and re-cleaning.

Re: Restauración A2
Yyy ... job finished, refilled and no leaks
Turn of the exhaust pipe, I bought it whole, I decided to paint it black with heat paint and leave the tip of the exhaust a metal color ...
