Unread post by kwb » November 14th, 2021, 10:47 am

Anyone know where i can buy a air idle screw for a 12848 carburetor? I have a couple used carbs but someone has cranked the screws in to tight and junked them. thanks

High probability that the carburetors are also junk because of that. I think the idle screw is part of the carburetor kit but I am sure someone will be able to give you one over there.

Kwb,

Parts kits for the carb are available from Norfar.com. Look for kit # K2167 on page 2 under carb parts. Kind of expensive at $64.69 if all you need is the idle screw. They also sell the complete carb.

Hope this helps you,
Cal

I can assure you that the screw will be fine and the carb will be what is destroyed. The screw is brass and the carb body is aluminum. Brass is much harder than aluminum and the brass will win that battle. If you run your finger in the throat of the carb past the mixture screw port you should not feel anything. If you feel a protrusion where that needle is then the carb has been damaged. If you have a lot of trouble getting the idle stabilized then that is the problem, the hole has been enlarged. In this case the carburetor core is junk. Sorry to say but there is nothing you can do but trash it and get another carb. Spending money on a kit is useless in this case. I don't have any spare external needles but I have 20-30 of the internal style, I can send you one for postage if you want to verify that the needle is not the problem. That needle will work the same way, you just need a small screwdriver to adjust it.

I have thrown away a carburetor for this problem. The screw was fine, the carburetor had a bulge on its neck and it had gone bad inside. Follow the instructions that rickf says and you will be right.

I thought you did not know what it looked like or where it was? And yes, that carburetor does have a mixture screw, under that emissions block off cover is the screw.

Ya, I thought they put a cover like thing over the mixture screw to disguise it so no-one would change the setting by turning the screw, which in theory is a good idea/now if my grammar is good enough for interpretation?

Rick, just done a heck of a lot of research. Apparently there is one but it is preset and not to be messed with.

If you say so. They used the same, or similar, blocking methods on every carburetor made after 1975 to prevent people from readjusting the carburetors to bypass emissions controls. Do you really think an M-151 would pass todays emissions standards? Even the lowest standards of 3 and 300? Only in California and one or two other counties of certain state do you still have to worry about keeping that plug on there. And in my case where I am professionally rebuilding the carbs I have to remove both the cap and the needle to do the job then I need to set it all back up again on the actual engine it will be run on and then put the plug back in if I am doing one for California. That is why I do not ask where it is going!
