Old books, anybody still read old books?

Unread post by rickf » February 17th, 2024, 1:08 pm

This is a bit off subject but I want to post it here and on all of the other forums I go to to get an idea what to do with these books.

I have a lot of old books that I simply cannot throw out. There have got to still be people is this world that actually read printed books. These are all old books, as an example I have two huge Mark Twain books. I have many WWII aircraft books from my dad. I also have several books on Hitler that I doubt anyone has interest in but my dad studied him extensively and I think it had something to do with whatever he did in the military. He never told me what that was to the day he passed but I do know that when I was in and I needed to get T1 secret clearance I found out quickly that he also had that clearance still in 1972.
I gave probably 100 books to a young lady who was starting a library in a depressed area of Philadelphia as a college project, never heard the outcome but I suspect most of those books probably ended up in a dumpster eventually. I do not want that to happen with these. They are old enough to be part of our history and I do not want some Woke idiot saying that is not permissible to read.

The oldest book I have made in 1926.The basement wall has bookcases full of books, so is another room.Have 3 or 4 MOTOR auto repair books(outdated though, no longer have the cars.)The library will sometimes take books as a donation. They also will sell them to make room.Antique book stores are always looking for old books to sell.Sometimes they'd share the sale.
I'll look around to see if I am in need of any. Some of the old-time fix it books were good for using material that you would already have.

I wouldn't be afraid to donate them to a larger library if you aren't looking to sell them outright. Our local library actually runs a book store for the books that don't get to stay in the library....which benefits the library monetarily and puts those leftover books squarely back into the hands of people who really want them. Win-win.

Tried the libraries and book stores. Nobody wants books anymore. The libraries around here are dumping books.

we read old books a lot here at our house. every room has bookcases, and some of them go back to the mid 1800s. when i retired, i took my auto glass catalogs, which went from 1939 to 1998, and donated them to the car museum. they were glad to get them. if you have old motor manuals you might ask the nearest car museum if they are interested in them. we bought some more old books just this week. they are getting pretty cheap, since they are currently out of favor.

I just keep remembering LP records, NOBODY wanted them and now they command top dollar since they have found the sound quality is much better than can be achieved with CD or digital.

Lots of people out there still reading books. Problem is, like a lot of things, is finding where these people are. With the hobby being spread across so many different social media platforms and even monthly papers newsletters, finding the right audience is sometimes difficult.
The local military surplus store here buys military themed books. The library where I used to live has a really good booksale every week! Tens of thousands of books for sale.

Depends on how much work is worth the price you may get for them. You can try searching the ISBN or title on ebay or https://www.abebooks.com/ and see what they may be worth. For the ones that my not have a lot of value, you can try selling portions as a lot. The other G or some military themed forums might be the ticket. How about any of the militaria shows or re-enactments? There is a big one near here with a lot of vendors and thousands of visitors. https://www.midwayvillage.com/ww2-days-midway.html\
Good luck whatever you do.
