What caused my Mutt to miss and sputter

Unread post by csmith » December 30th, 2009, 4:28 pm

Just thought I would post the results of some recent issues recently cured for the benefit of those newbes and not so mechanics like myself. First issue: When I got my mutt it suffered from slow start, motor turned over slowly and once started it would sputter when accelerating. After consulting some of our resident experts I found a good mach to come to my house to check the basics (See RickF's before you ask) and we found plug gap, timing off and choke cable bent. Fixed the gap, set timing, replaced choke cable and everything seemed fine. Easy start, no more problems with acceleration UNTIL LAST WEEK! Last week I started having a big problem with missing, sputtering again when accelerating under load (especially when climbing a hill), to the point of almost cutting off. Consulted the experts again and was advised to check the fuel filter that attaches to the carb, so I did a pressure check and sure enough it was blocked about 70%. Changed the filter and now it’s running better than ever! It's the basics!! Thanks for the help guys!

Half, I would like to put together a repacement parts kit, what items would you suggest for the ignition system? Also, I remember a while back someone put together a list of spare parts one should always have handy for a road trip, do you know where I can find this? I checked Wiki but did not see it there.

For the ignition, I always carry a cap, rotor, filter capacitor, coil, and ignition module.

For ignition,
One should carry a fully functional distributor with leads and plugs and all the tools required for it.
I think a rebuilt distributor costs around $250 or something.

Thanks all, I have a spare distributor, long wire, plugs, belts, so I will look to get the other parts. I would add to the list a bunch of spare fuel filters, the ones that attach to the carb and the one for the fuel tank. I'm told they foul easily.

If you run an aftermarket filter inline you will not have to worry about the one on the carb. I very seldom see the tank filter clog.
