M151 Oil Bath Canister - Question
Hey Guys-
I have only seen the guts of one type of Oil Bath and this one is different than the one I had fitted to my last M151A2. Can you guys tell me if this inner "bucket" is supposed to pull out of the Oil Bath that bolts to the firewall? It seems like it should but I don't want to force it. Please let me know if you have one like this and if so whether or not I should be able to pull it out. It sure would make it easier to clean if it did
Matt-

A picture would help but all of the ones I have dealt with come apart so they can be cleaned.

I had them ready to go and forgot to post them. There they are now. That "bucket" if it is supposed to come out, sure is stuck good. Shouldn't it have a handle to pull on or am I missing something or some part.

Looks like it should come out. If there are no spot welds the only thing holding it together is the power of Greyskull.
My filter was used as target practice, i eventually got it apart, but it was so boogered up, I simply repaired the outer portion and put a K&N filter mod together

mr. D. the entire filter should come out as a unit. You should with the filter removed see the impression on main body that says oil level and an arrow...if you can see words oil level that it...

Matt, it should lift easily using the center pull handle, to remove the steel wool the inner top unit should twist until the marks line up then it should lift out of the unit that is still in your air cleaner canister. See 4-97 TM 9-2320-218-20-1-1

Yep that's what I expected mine to look like. But see the inside bottom of mine is different? I think I may have once had a bucket but the top piece with the handle, that's shown in the picture, must have broken loose. Strange stuff.

Re: M151 Oil Bath Canister - Question
I need to look into the K&N deal. I think the guts of this oil bath are a little buggered. The top piece has separated from the filter element (bucket) due to excessive grime build up. If I fit the K&N modification I suppose the current condition won't matter? I just got it all apart. Thanks for your posts...I wanted to make sure I wasn't looking at a different kind of oil bath.

Mr.D
You don't have to buy an expensive KN filter. You can use the standard paper air filter from the Ford V8 Explorer and get just as good of a performance gain. And you can attach it with silicone instead of screws like the KN modification. That way, it can easily be put back to stock without either having to fill screw holes or buy new parts. And the horsepower gain, while noticeable, is not a huge one.

Re: M151 Oil Bath Canister - Question
Mr D, I had the same problem, initially. Asked my dad and he said all the buckets comes out for cleaning, so what I did was;
1) tapped the sides of the retainer with the wooden handle of a hammer (light taps, just to break any suction created by moisture between the two)
2) held the upper lips of the bucket (applied pressure by my thumbs on the inside walls of the bucket) and started to rotate the bucket back and forth, that gave it the movement and then with one pull picked it out.
There was moisture inside and that had given it little rust spots that caused the jam. Cleaned it up well with gasoline, sprayed WD40 on it and put in back in.
Ever since its been easy to pull it out for a clean (after every run that involves any sort of water venturing)
