Re: Generic jeep
Got one side of the Alley Cat floors repaired today, those migs sure hate that rusty metal, hope to knock out the other side tomorrow, unless my wife takes me Christmas shopping.
Re: Generic jeep

Re: Generic jeep
Hey, Hambone... I have an Alley Cat as well. My driver's side gas tank floor and sidewall was shot to pieces with rust.
Here's something you might want to consider now that you are where you are on the project. The reason that area of mine went so bad in the first place is the support panel for the seat holds everything that gets in there, in there(!) and there's no practical way to maintain it.
When I get mine put back in, my forward seat support is going to be constructed of some square or rectangular tubing so that I can get back into that space to clean it out from time to time. I don't know about you but I've never, ever stuck my head down in the footwell to look at that panel so I think there isn't much debate about how important cosmetics are vs. the potential for more rust but if I truly don't like the look, I may very well create a removable cover for it.
Cheers,
TJ

Re: Generic jeep
I think the one I have sat for years with leaves in the floor, ate them up pretty good, at least it's all flat metal, so not hard to repair, hopefully mine won't be left in the weather anymore. I'm not sure it is an Alley Cat, it's made a little different from yours, I was told it was built in Texas, mine came from Houston.
Re: Generic jeep
Well, I've tried to speak with the guy who made these (http://www.samssurplus.com) but his daughter (at least I think it was his daughter) politely declined my request. It would be interesting to know if he made some design changes along the way but he certainly had some skills, to say the least!
Alley Cats were made in Stanton, Texas, which is on 20, up between Big Spring and Midland and I have it on very good authority that this is where mine originated. That is not to say that one or two didn't get retailed elsewhere, like Houston.
Either way, I think the Alley Cats are extremely well-constructed....much better than the original 151 models but that is what you get when all the government's restrictions on manner of construction, weight limitations and so forth, are lifted.
Now that I've reached a plateau on my A2, I'm thinking of diving back into the Alley Cat project just a little bit but this coming year is going to be the year of the half track for me. I'm dreadfully tired of having to look at it and not really be able to enjoy it.
Cheers,
TJ

Re: Generic jeep
I stopped at Sam's a few times when I was driving big rigs in the late 90's, at that time he had a set of jigs in the back part of the warehouse that covered 3 large work tables that had 1 being built and 1 finished tub on the floor, this was before I got my first 151 and I didn't think it was a big deal! Had I known then what I know now I would have bought one or both!

Re: Generic jeep
m3a1 - your link to sams doesn't get me anything but the home page. What are you referring to?
Some people are too busy knowing it all to ever learn anything
Re: Generic jeep
He is telling you that Sams is the place that made the Ally Cat.

Re: Generic jeep
Drove 600 miles yesterday for this free Christmas present, don't tell my wife but it's the best present I got.
Re: Generic jeep
38A1 that appears to be in pretty good shape. Where do you find these things?!

Re: Generic jeep
There was a guy on the other G giving it away, just happened to be trolling when he posted it, he didn't have any metal skills so he bought a MD Juan body kit, he also hooked me up with his new windshield and hood that came with the kit, tub has a couple rust spots, easy fix, now I have to find a M38A1 with a rusted out body.rickf wrote:38A1 that appears to be in pretty good shape. Re: Generic jeep
I have one spotted, the floors are rotted out, tranny shifter is locked up, but the motor isn't, I'm sure the tranny is full of water, he has to ask his son if he wants to keep it, if not, he would take $500, so did the early cj5 have the same frame and axles?
Re: Generic jeep
Frame yes, axles I will have to check on for you. The engine is the i=only question mark. I think only the first year or two of the CJ used the same engine. Send a PM to Diamondjim, he will have all of those answers. I think he may be on the road right now though. I should be seeing him in a few days so I will ask.
